Description

It is always a joy to watch horses play and run freely. As a child, I would excitedly wait for feed time when the horses came running from the big paddock’s top corner. The sound of their hooves, the dust kicked up, the excited whinnies. A playful tousle would often occur at the gate while waiting for their dinner.

Horses are social animals and have evolved to live in herds. They establish hierarchies, and communication and form strong bonds through play. Horses learn how to use their bodies, build coordination, and explore their environment as well as relieve stress and frustration from built-up energy reserves. To an outsider, it may look violent, but play is vital for a horse’s well-being. \

Domesticated horses may not have the same opportunity as wild horses to interact and play with others. Horses that are not properly socialised can suffer from loneliness and boredom, often manifesting into anxiety, aggression, and other behaviours such as weaving, pacing, chewing, etc. Just as enrichment is important to household animals such as dogs and cats, horses need the chance to explore, sniff, roll, and play too!

Hijinx celebrates horseplay, their joy, and their freedom.
